Since 17 June 2013, any individual having a new DBS check undertaken on them (whether as a new appointment or as a re-check) has also had the option of subscribing to the DBS Update Service.
Once registered, an individual may give consent to a current or future employer/organisation to undertake online 'status checks' which will allow the employer to establish if the individual's DBS check is still current or whether there have been changes to the information held on the DBS check since it was issued.
Employees have to pay an annual fee of £13 to register (the first payment will be at the time of subscription and thereafter annually) by debit or credit card, and volunteers can subscribe for free.
Where an individual is registered, the employer (with his/her consent) can undertake limitless online checks at no cost meaning that a new DBS application does not need to be made every time a check is required.
Use the links on the below to access more detailed guidance on the update service for both employers and employees and practical information on undertaking status checks.
